After a quiet start, Henley found their form and took an early lead though a deflection from open play by Sarah Drummond. Marlow fought back hard and were rewarded with a number of short corners. Despite their best efforts, they was no match for the Henley defence who closed down play by distributing the ball out wide for counter attacks up the wings. Links of play up the centre of the pitch by Emma England and Rachel Herbert to upfronts Taminah Brown and Sarah Drummond secured Henley with an opportunity for another goal from a short corner. After a couple of attempts, the ball was finally netted by Karen Walker from a slap across the D to the far post.
The second half started with great pace by both teams but it was Marlow that took advantage of their free hits, although only converting them into circle entries. Great saves by Emily Channon kept the opposition at bay to allow Henley to maintain their lead. An effective press set by Henley applied pressure on Marlow’s defence, rewarding the side with another short corner opportunity. The ball was injected to Walker for another pass across goal. Drummond, Herbert and Meg Parker ran in on post for the deflection, but a save by the keeper stopped the ball from entering the goal. Sophy Rogers capitalised on the rebound and provided the all import tap in to increase Henley’s lead.
The final score stood at 3-0 to Henley, gaining them another 3 points to edge them closer to a promotion opportunity. This weekend Henley Ladies 2s play Windsor Ladies 1s to continue their push to maintain, if not increase their league table position.
