Hat-trick for Lyons as 2s maintain top spot

The Ladies 2s, this week, faced Wallingford 2s, who needed some points in their battle against relegation - beware the team in a relegation battle!

Henley started incredibly brightly and put early pressure on the Wallingford defence who struggled to clear their lines. A short corner a few minutes into the game saw Chloe Lyons exchange a neat 1-2 with Kirsten Botha and slot home to open the scoring.

Relentless pressure from Henley saw further shots and D entries ensue for the next period of the game, however, Wallingford managed to gain a foothold in the game and started attacking themselves. Some wonderful defending from the young trio of Sophie Miller, Giorgia Fiorentino and Izzy Woolfrey was required, and a couple of goal line scraps meant Henley only just stayed ahead.

Henley regained their composure and dominance with some fresh energy from the bench - Botha started to snuff out Wallingford's midfield and Ellie Roseff came on to assist in that endeavour, dominating the middle of the pitch. From this Henley started attacking again, especially via the excellent wing play of player of the match Bethan Lewis and super fast Lily Baker.

Henley’s forward trio of Lyons, Hayley Munt and Emma Buckham-Hedges begun to get more ball, and linking play saw Wallingford's goalkeeper made some good saves from all 3, with midfielder Sophy Rogers, coming close on the back post too! Finally, just before half time Henley got their second, Lyons hammering a short corner straight strike into the bottom corner.

The team were encouraged to keep playing their composed, expansive hockey in the second half and the team responded. Olivia Callaway kept the ball and distributed it effectively in midfield and Jenny Buckham-Hedges had cameos in a few positions, her tenacious energy and forward thinking working well against a tiring Wallingford. The third goal came from yet another driving run by Baker - her shot deflected up to head height off a defensive stick! The ball fell to Lyons who controlled it down and dispatched it into the bottom corner.

The fourth goal came from yet another well worked short corner; Lyons slapping the ball back to injector Sophy R, who calmly found the net from her own rebounded initial shot. Coach Hayley Rogers set piece calls on fire this game!

Henley 2s remain 6 points clear at the top of the league with 4 games remaining and a tough trip to Witney 2s next up.
