Two decisive goals for 'unstoppable' Lily Baker

Fresh off the back of last week’s confidence-boosting win, Henley Ladies 2s entered the clash against Phoenix 1s with nothing to lose and everything to prove. Still newcomers to the league, Henley approached the fixture with positivity, hunger, and a clear game plan: start fast, take it to the opposition, and set the tone early.

From the first whistle, Henley were dominant. The first 15 minutes saw them enjoy an impressive 90% of possession, stringing together positive link-up play and showcasing composure across the field. The defensive line stood solid and unshaken, snuffing out any Phoenix advances before they could develop. Despite this early control, Henley were unable to convert their chances, with Phoenix clinging on and absorbing the pressure.

Against the run of play, Phoenix capitalised on a rare breakaway, forcing a short corner. The opportunity was executed clinically, and Henley found themselves trailing 1-0 — a harsh blow given the early dominance.

But heads didn’t drop. A rousing halftime team talk reignited the fire. Messages were clear: stay calm, stay focused, and keep playing our game. The second half saw a revitalised Henley side return to the pitch with renewed purpose. Wave after wave of Henley attacks poured forward. The Phoenix goalkeeper was called into repeated action, making several sharp saves to deny the equaliser.

Henley’s pressure finally paid off. A smart sideline play saw the ball worked out wide and driven across the D. Lily Baker was there to receive, swivel, and coolly slot the ball into the corner — a well-earned leveller that sparked wild celebrations.

With momentum now firmly in Henley’s favour, they pushed for the winner. The breakthrough came again via Baker, who was simply unstoppable on the day. Intercepting a loose Phoenix pass at the top of the D, she broke forward with intent, laid the ball off to Hayley Munt on the left, and received it back inside the attacking D before calmly placing it past the keeper. A textbook one-two and a finish worthy of a match-winner.

Henley saw out the remainder of the game with composure and control. This was another display of unity, grit, and growing belief — a true team performance and a well-deserved victory for Henley Ladies 2s.
