After Salisbury Ladies 1s declined a pre-season fixture, there was always going to be a little extra edge to this game. On home turf, Henley Ladies 1s were ready to let their hockey do the talking — and they did exactly that with a composed and commanding 2–0 victory.
From the first whistle, Henley showed intent. Strong, decisive passing through the middle carved open opportunities, finding Caitlin Barrass and Ella Shute high up the pitch. The forward line battled hard in the D, and it was Ella who made the breakthrough — reacting sharply in a crowded circle to slot the ball home and give Henley a deserved lead.
Henley continued to press, creating chance after chance. The structure across the pitch was impressive, with disciplined positioning and intelligent movement keeping Salisbury on the back foot. Pippi Heath, back from London, added real steel and composure to the midfield, linking play beautifully and providing a solid platform to build from.
Charlotte Hetherington was relentless throughout — a constant nuisance for the Salisbury defence. The home side’s pressure converted in to numerous short corners — some of them beautifully worked routines — however, Henley couldn’t quite convert from set pieces. On another day, the scoreline could have been even more emphatic. Henley continued to dominate possession and territory, with the defence staying organised and resolute to preserve the clean sheet.
Captain, Charlotte Granger Holcombe’s immense work rate right into the the closing stages of the game finally paid off when a superb turnover led to a one-on-one opportunity for Granger-Holcombe, who was fouled by the keeper. She still managed to find Barrass, and the youngster drove towards goal, however, with advantage being played, Henley kept their composure and a body on the line earned the home side a penalty flick. With the final whistle blown, Billie Moore stepped up confidently and made no mistake, firing home to double the lead.
A strong all-round performance, plenty of positives, and perhaps a satisfying response to pre-season history. Final score: Henley 2–0 Salisbury.
