Henley Ladies 1s returned to Jubilee Park determined to bounce back after two tough results - with the aim to play the quick, connected, and disciplined hockey they have been showcasing so far this season. From the starting whistle, Henley looked sharp and composed against an established Maidenhead Ladies 1’s.
From the first minute to the last, the game was end to end with both teams doing all they could to get just one ball in the net.
The defence were outstanding throughout, breaking down Maidenhead’s advances and playing critical balls to the midfield line, collapsing the oppositions defensive press. On the occasions when Maidenhead did find openings, Anjana Sothynathan, in goal, produced several crucial saves to keep Henley firmly in the match.
Despite many attempts at goal by either side the game remained locked at 0–0 deep into the final quarter. However with the crowd on their side, Henley’s determination and refusal to let the tempo drop paid off. With the game being played out in a dramatic fashion, Pippi Heath showed great vision in midfield to thread the ball up the line to Caitlin Barrass, who carried it smartly into the D before firing a cross to Lucy Wiseman. Under extreme pressure, Wiseman stepped onto her back foot and slotted the ball home three seconds before the final whistle to secure a dramatic 1–0 win.
Henley were proud to prove their ambition and resilience as they continue to successfully establish themselves in a new league, following promotion last season.
