Henley ladies topple the top team

The temperatures had plummeted but the game was hot as the two very evenly matched teams fought for ascendency. Having changed their strategy this week, bearing in mind the threat of a potentially stronger opposition, Henley were keeping things tight. The defensive unit were working hard to keep the lines together, marshalled by centre back Kath Draycott, and with the aggressive tackling of Mel Joyce and the amazing reach of Kat Green, little was getting through!

Most of the play was in the centre of the pitch, being kept out of the way of the goals, however Henley did face a few defensive short corners. The threat from these is always real, however Henley were able to keep a clean sheet with Rachel Herbert being called into action to make a goal line save.

In the second half Henley were able to gain some advantage themselves, and in a period of play that saw the ball driven down the lefthand side of the pitch and into the goal area, it was captain Georgie Metcalfe to whom the ball fell. Amongst a melee of players feet and sticks, she was able to redirect the ball and slot it inside the righthand post, just out of the keepers reach! 1 - 0 Henley. Despite further attempts on both goals, and a injury to the head of Metcalfe, Henley were able to hold on to the win. Other results on the day have left Henley in 5th position in the league, however with only 2 points between top and 5th - anything could happen! Next week Henley are at home to Milton Keynes (also in that tight top five!).
