After a mid week blip away to Leighton Buzzard, Henley returned to dominant form at Banbury. Off the back of a rare 1 goal defeat, Henley were respectful of the lower placed side, and were determined that they needed to play at their best to get back to winning ways. They started the game hard and attacked from the off with Georgie Metcalfe passing the ball to Emma Jean-Jean - the whole team taking the Banbury side unawares. It was through Jean-Jean that the first goal was scored, just 3 minutes into the match, when she used her skills, drove into the Banbury circle and crossed the ball. Kiera Halloran was waiting at the far post and opened the scoring with a comfortable tap in. Henley were determined to assert themselves on the game and only a minute later, Lou Lynch received the ball from Caitlin Barass, who had used her searing pace to drive around the right base line. Barass found Lynch in the circle, who slotted the ball home past the Banbury keeper. It was a fast start from the Henley side when their third was scored before the 6th minute had finished. This time, Metcalfe was at it again - she received the ball in the circle, stepped on to her back foot - and in classic Georgie style - smashed the ball low and hard into the righthand side of the goal. 3-0
Henley continued to pile on the pressure, determined to cement their place at the top with a goal difference that could count. They played controlled and flowing hockey with some fabulous interplay up the left hand side leading to a penalty corner. After injecting the ball at pace, captain Charlotte Hetherington received it back near the left post deftly deflecting it goalwards, past the flailing keeper, to make it 4. Another left side attack saw Jean-Jean at it again, taking on players and threading the ball unselfishly across the face of the crowded goal to find the perfectly placed Lily Baker waiting to slot home her first goal for the 1st XI. Henley did not let up the pressure and shortly before half time they made it 6 with Metcalfe and her pinpoint accuracy slamming home another power shot.
Banbury came out after half time with a resilient air and put together a good passage of play, rattling the Henley side for a few moments. The pressure was however, absorbed by the back line and Lucy Jean-Jean, making her debut in defence, began a move down the right hand side. The ball eventually made it to her sister in the final quarter of the pitch and Emma, lifting the ball up onto her stick, deployed her 3D skills and beat a number of players and, moving ever goal wards, cheekily wrong footed the keeper to slot the ball home on the near post - Henley were off again. After more pressure, Halloran secured a second when a short corner saw Metcalfe put the goal to the right post for her to lift past the post player for Henley’s 8th. It was from another short corner that Henley got their 9th - the ball was slipped to Metcalfe on the right, only to slip it back to Rachel Herbert in her customary position at the top. She took the ball in, flicked it to the keepers right and Caitlin Barass helped it over the line with yet another Henley deflection. The 10th goal saw Metcalfe secure her hat-trick; the ball landing with her in the circle, she showed all her strength and composure to flick the ball past the Banbury keeper.
After a small lapse in concentration (and a little experimentation at the back it could be said) Banbury managed to secure themselves a breakaway consolation goal, however, Henley were not to be put off their stride and Captain Hetherington netted her second and Henley’s final goal, again on the post, with a lovely deflection rounding off a comprehensive win and a solid and flowing team performance.
