South Berkshire hosted Henley in a dank and dark late afternoon start in Wokingham. South Berks, who were sitting bottom of the league going into this game, needed a win to have any chance of avoiding relegation. Henley on the other hand, were all but mathematically safe. The hosts had a much younger development side then their Oxfordshire visitors: 75% of South Berks Team were under 15 while Henley were 75% over 40, and the home side’s younger legs tested their opponents early on.
South Berks had a strong first half, leading 1-0 at half time - although this could also be put down potentially to a lack of composure from Henley, who also had their chances, including several short corners, but could not finish final moves. Indefinite or lack lustre passes, lack of mobility and space creation, or attempting to dribble through South Berks, all left the Henley team failing to achieve some of the form they have seen earlier in the season.
A bullish half time talk from the experienced Woolfrey and Grocock set expectations with some simple and direct direction. Henley came out strongly and generally had a better second half, creating numerous chances. Sadly, only one resulted in a goal. At a short corner In the first quarter, Poacher turned game keeper Alex Woolfrey (normally a goalkeeper) collected the ball from a composed Mike Woolfrey, to then slip the ball past South Berks goalkeeper. With the score level, Henley’s overall play improved markedly and the side started to create space for themselves to open up the pitch. However while Henley created opportunity, they could not get past South Berks defence.
The game finished South Berkshire 1 - Henley 1. A result that suited Henley bet
