Henley Men’s 2s secured all three points against Oxford 3s in a goal scoring performance that confirms their place in the top four of the league standings and it was the home side that drew first blood. A penalty flick from Alex Smith was dispatched with confidence into the top corner to give the home side a deserved lead. Oxford, however, refused to roll over, pulling level shortly after through a moment of fortune — a bounce pass somehow threading its way past a cluster of defenders to find a striker with a clear sight of goal.
The visitors’ equaliser only seemed to galvanise Henley. They had a second goal disallowed but the team kept their heads and were rewarded before the break. Robert Farina — continuing his fine form in front of goal this season — stepped up to restore Henley’s advantage, sending the sides in at half-time with Henley having a 2-1 lead.
Henley came out with purpose after the interval, pressing Oxford back and converting two further penalty corners from Ed Hughes-Burne and a second from Alex Smith to put the game firmly beyond reach.
