Henley Men’s 1st XI picked up their first win of the South Central Premier League season in their first home match against Winchester Men’s 1st XI.

Despite dominating much of the first half, the amber and blues found themselves a goal down at halftime, following a scrappy penalty corner goal on the 25-minute mark. Despite numerous attempts on goal, including Jonny Taylor striking the crossbar, the score remained 0-1 going into the break.

In the second half, Henley played some flowing hockey and deservedly equalised through Andrew Seimann, who tapped in from close range after a goalmouth scramble from a penalty corner.

With 10 minutes left to play, Sam Heaver scored Henley’s winner, pouncing on a deflected cross to volley the ball past the Winchester goalkeeper and send the home fans into raptures.

With 5 minutes left to play there was late drama as Winchester were awarded a penalty flick, following the ball striking a shin pad on the line. This presented the away side with a golden opportunity to steal a point. Step forward 17 year old goal keeper Alex Woolfrey - making his league debut. A low and powerful flick was saved by Woolfrey's left toe in a fine save and Henley went on to cooly see out the game with some silky skills and composure from Adam Herbert earning the home side a final corner late on. Unfortunately this was not converted, however, the home side earned a valuable 3 points in their new league.

This weekend Henley are back at Jubilee Park once again, where they will face Staines Men’s 1st XI at 1.30 PM.
