Henley Men’s 1st XI moved to the top of South Central Premier League 2 table, after beating Oxford OBU Men’s 1st XI 4-0 last Saturday with a spirited and clinical performance.
Henley took the lead after just 6 minutes through Sam Heaver, who latched onto a superb Robbie Mortimer through ball to power the ball past the helpless OBU defender on the goal line.
Henley doubled their lead after 20 minutes, as Phil Laurie’s reverse stick strike beat the OBU goalkeeper, following some flowing hockey from the amber and blues.
At the other end of the pitch Henley goalkeeper Lee Rowe-Elliott was in inspired form, saving anything that came his way, meaning Henley took a 2-0 lead into the second half.
On 45 minutes the home side scored their third goal of the day, again through Sam Heaver, who neatly drilled the ball into the bottom corner of the goal after a wonderful exchange of passes down the right-wing from Welsh wizards Rhys Joyce and Andew Seimann.
Ten minutes from time, Henley sealed the victory through Phil Laurie, grabbing his second goal of the day following smart play down the left wing between Robbie Mortimer and captain Ed Foster, leading to another textbook Mortimer pinpoint cross.
Henley will look to maintain their lead at the top of the league when they travel to Sonning Hockey Club this weekend.
