Henley 5ths entertained Marlow in an exciting 3–3 thriller at Jubilee Park on Saturday. A youthful Marlow side started strongly, immediately putting Henley’s old dogs at the back under pressure and racing into a 2–0 lead, despite some excellent saves, and plenty of life advice, from Ed Newbold in goal.
Gradually, Henley’s midfield began to find their rhythm. With passes starting to flow and the penetrating runs of Charlie Edgell and captain Sam Austin troubling the Marlow defence, Henley forced a succession of short corners and finally began to apply some real pressure. That pressure eventually paid off when Nicholas Segrue unleashed a thunderous strike into the top corner, leaving the Marlow keeper flailing.
Re-energised, Henley pushed forward as half-time approached. Pires Edgell and Simon Taylor combined neatly to free Segrue once again, and he made no mistake, drilling home another bullet to bring the sides level at 2–2.
The second half proved a more niggly affair, with both teams unwilling to give an inch. Marlow were the first to break the deadlock, regaining the lead with about 15 minutes to play. But Henley dug deep once more, and it was their much‑loved Captain fantastic, Sam Austin, who finished sharply after a flowing team move to level the scores at 3–3.
And that’s how it ended, honours even, and on balance, probably the right result after a hugely entertaining contest.
