Men's 5s v Amersham and Chalfont

Rachel Herbert15 Sep - 14:59

Spirited second half performance almost secures the win

Henley Hockey Club’s 5th XI travelled to Amersham & Chalfont for a pre-season friendly that delivered drama, determination, and plenty of promise ahead of the new league campaign.

The opening half was a tough test for Henley, who played some attractive hockey and moved the ball well, creating several chances that went unconverted. In contrast, Amersham were clinical, capitalising on their opportunities to take a 3–0 lead into the break.

A focused team talk and tactical tweaks sparked a second-half resurgence. Henley came out firing, and within 20 minutes had turned the game on its head. Ed Newbold converted two well-worked short corners, while a high press led to a turnover and a flowing team goal finished by Simon Taylor after a driving run and assist from Sam Austin. Nicholas Segrue added a fourth after a well placed strike from the top of the area to put Henley 4–3 ahead.

Despite their spirited comeback, tired legs began to show late on, and Amersham snatched two late goals to edge the contest 5–4.

Henley may not have taken the win, but the performance was full of positives. With strong team spirit and encouraging signs across the pitch, the 5s look well-prepared for the season ahead.
