Henley started strong and appeared to be in control of the game. The defensive foursome of Kat Green, Karen Walker, Meg Moran and Rachel Herbert kept the back clear with great attacking balls forward creating opportunities to press forward. With a rush of attack by Hawks, they were able to gain a string of penalty corners which the defence fought hard to clear. An accidental leg on the line resulted in a penalty flick against Henley which Hawks put back into the net. After regrouping Henley pressed on with more determination and found themselves getting a penalty short corner right before the 1st half was due to end. With a well-rehearsed short corner routine, Green played an inch perfect ball into Louisa England where she was able to deflect the ball straight into the goal, leaving the game 1-1 at half time.
With Henley’s spirit raised going into the second half the hard and tactical thinking from mid- fielders Jem Barham and Ellie Roseff, Henley were able to keep formation with Hawks finding it difficult to get their attack through. Henley were awarded another penalty corner half way through the second half and with an almost carbon copy of the first penalty corner from Green and England, another goal was put away.
Henley’s work rate was relentless throughout and although tiring towards the end Hawks applied some pressure to aim for the equaliser with a penalty corner in the last seconds. Although a bit touch and go the composure of the defence and with stand-out saves from Hannah Lavis, Henley ensured they secured the win.
