Henley Ladies 1st XI suffered a 3 – 1 defeat to Wycombe Hockey Club in their final game of the season at Jubilee Park last Saturday.

Despite a bright start from Henley, it was the visitors who took the lead mid way through the first half with a well worked penalty corner routine. The ball from the top of the circle was played back to the injector, who was able to sweep home first time from a tight angle.
Wycombe doubled their lead shortly after, again from a penalty corner. The initial strike was saved well by the pads of Hannah Lavis in the Henley goal but the rebound fell kindly to a Wycombe player on the post, and she reacted quickest to poke over the line.

Moments before the break Henley halved the deficit after centre forward Charlotte Cockerton won a penalty corner. The ball was played to Emma Walker on the left hand side of the circle and her low, powerful shot found the net to give the hosts a boost heading into half time.
Henley dominated possession in the opening stages of second half, forcing Wycombe deep into their own circle. Jem Barham and Lou England worked tirelessly in midfield with the latter making some fantastic weaving runs through the Wycombe defence, earning the home side numerous penalty corners. From one of the resultant corners, Kat Green came agonisingly close to equalising when she pounced on a rebound but her shot flashed wide of the keeper’s right hand post.

The home team continued to pressurise the side in blue but they were unable to find the break through and 15 minutes before the final whistle, Wycombe put the game out of Henley’s reach. They broke quickly from defence, up the left hand side of the pitch and despite the ball hitting a Wycombe foot before crossing the line, it was controversially awarded, sealing a 3 – 1 victory for the visitors.

The result means that Henley finish seventh in Division 3A of the South Clubs’ Women’s Hockey League and with a strong squad, have plenty of positives to build on for the start new season in September.
