Three lightning goals in opening minutes stun Abingdon

Henley 4s continued their leap up the table with a phenomenal thrashing of Abingdon. Right from the first whistle the Henley attack knew they were going to be having a field day as Philip Biggs’ twisting run and fine shot put the travelling side 1-0 up. Simon Ward, the defender turned striker fired a shot past the goalkeeper and an own goal resulting from another brilliant Philip Biggs run gave Henley an early 3-0 lead. The hosts got a goal back through a fortunate bobble, which deceived everyone including the Henley 'keeper. But, with goal difference in the back of their minds, Henley pressed on. A moment of brilliance from Simon Taylor extended Henley’s league with the midfielder sweeping a cross first time into the bottom left corner. Rupert Wiseman gave the Henley side a 5-1 lead going into the half time break with a close range effort.

In the second half, Abingdon certainly stepped their game up. As the rain began to pour down Henley couldn’t revive their performance in their first half. Henley thought that they had a goal when James Lane hit the ball into the D where Ewan Watkins deflected the ball through his legs into the goal. But it was deemed that the ball did not travel 5 yards, much to Henley’s bemusement. But it was Ewan Watkins who closed the game off with a short range finish after a short corner.
