Promoted Henley’s final match of the season was against mid-table West Hampstead. If Henley were to win this match, it would have seen them crowned Southern Premier Hockey League Division 2 champions; however West Hampstead proved to be as determined for the win.
The match started well for Henley, as the away side craved out numerous chances to take the lead. On the 20-minute mark they did just that, as Geoff Joseph’s inspired effort through his own legs flew past the West Hampstead goal keeper. Despite a series of short corners Henley were unable to double their lead, and the score line remained 1-0 at the half time interval.
The second half proved to be a much more open encounter, which suited the home side. Despite goals from Luke Gupta and Ross Hibberd, meaning Henley were 3-2 up with 15 minutes to go, the side looked very tired and were second best for much of the half. The home side showed plenty of desire to win the match and did just that, ending up deserved 5-3 winners in what ended up being a second half to forget for the boys in amber and blue.
Although Henley were therefore unable to take home the league title, Henley’s promotion to Southern Premier League 1 cannot be over-looked. For the first time in the club’s history, the side will be competing at just one level below National League next season.
