This is how half term should be spent

What I did on my holidays
By Edward Bowyer, age 11 and a half

Chapter 1 (Day 1)

Dad told me that Mum was going to be very busy today doing lots of jobs, so I was going to have to sit on the side of a pitch at a school in Bicestershire, to watch the mighty Henley 2nd 11, play hockey against Bicester 1’s.
When we got there, having recently watched the Man City documentary on TV, I was looking forward to listening to the pre-match tactics, so I could compare Pep against Richie on the way that they both motivate a team to win. Firstly - Richie was giving 1 ‘Captain’s point’ to each player just for turning up... (apparently lots of player had decided to go away skiing or on Holiday somewhere nice) and secondly, if the team won, Beers where on Richie in the pub after the game (Pep never did that...)
After some other talking about where people stand on the pitch, they decided to go out onto the pitch to play hockey.
The first half started at a good speed, with attacking from Henley and counter attacks from Bicester. The first real chance of the half came from Bicester, beating the goalkeeper and forcing a great goal line save from Ali.
Not long after, a string of 6 quick passes and an assist from Tim, Richie slotted in the opening Henley goal.
Bicester attached back and won a short corner. Confused by the Bicester routine (left, right, left, right), the score was 1:1
It didn’t take much longer and Bicester won another short corner. Having been confused by their first attempt, the Henley defence watched Bicester do exactly the same routine and score a second. I’m not sure my Dad was too happy that he’d let a second goal in, that was the same as the first, thankfully with his helmet on, I couldn’t quite hear what he was shouting to himself.
The only other thing I noticed in the first half was Oscar tried a very bad flick.

Going in at half time at 2:1 down, there was lots of talking in the D, before the game restarted, all the defence had one final chat about not letting in anymore goals before getting back into position.
Henley where the stronger team, keeping the ball the most in the second half and it wasn’t long before Henley won a short corner and Ali with a powerful flick, scored ‘Top Bins’, Yayyyyyyyyyyy, leaving the Bicester defender and Goalkeeper staring at each other in wonder.....
Another Henley attack finished unsuccessful when Oscar forgot to shoot, which then led on to a card for Tim, I didn’t quite hear what he said to the umpire and I think my Dad was pleased I didn’t as he wouldn’t tell me what had been said when I asked him. Down to 10 men, At 2:2, there was 14 minutes left, Oscar fired an amazing flick down the pitch, picked up Jeremy, who span on the spot with the ball, pushing it under the keeper and scoring the best goal ever (BOOM).
Bicester did not seem happy and kept attacking and attacking for the last ten minutes, Winning short corner after short corner. Thankfully James, Brandon, Tom, Ali and Dad had learnt from the first 2 Bicester goals, as well as Bicester only having the one routine, some great saves by my Dad (he told me to say that) and a dead leg for Tom. Henley made sure that none of the last minute pressure, and short corners ended in a goal, meaning that Henley won 3:2
Following the game and lots of cheering, shaking hands and celebrations, Richie followed up on his promise and bought everyone a drink in the pub, I had a coke, even though I asked for a Guinness.....
Oscar was my favourite player, Kevin had a good game, the defenders learnt how to defend Bicester’s only short corner routine, Jezzer score the best goal I’ve ever seen and my Dad got Man of the match

The best bit of the day was on the way home, Dad stopped at McDonald’s and bought us all burgers for the journey home.
