Ladies 1s Development goalkeeper Katy Shaw, 15, has been selected to take part in the U16 England National Age Group Assessment Group.

Henley Hockey Club’s Ladies 1s Development goalkeeper Katy Shaw, 15, has been selected to take part in the U16 England National Age Group Assessment Group following a stellar performance competing in the England Hockey Futures Cup tournament last week, representing the U15 Mercia Lynx.

The Futures Cup is a four-day competition for U15 and U17 girls and boys held in August each year, with players selected to represent four teams from across the 16 performance centres in the country (Pennine Pumas, Mercia Lynx, Saxon Tigers and Wessex Leopards), joined by a team from Scotland (Caledonian Cougars) and a team from Wales (Celtic Jaguars).

Katy, who joined the England Player Pathway when she was 12 years old via the 2018 Berkshire Development Centre, progressed to the Berkshire Academy Centre in 2019. She represented Berkshire at both U13 and U14 level. Whilst COVID has disrupted playing and trials have been delayed, Katy was invited to join the Reading Performance Centre in 2021, from which she was selected for the Mercia team for the Futures Cup.

Mercia Lynx U15 played three matches, winning 4-3 against Wessex Leopards, losing 6-3 to Caledonian Cougars (Scotland) and narrowly losing the bronze medal match 3-2 to Pennine Pumas, leaving Mercia Lynx to finish fourth out of six. Katy played well throughout the tournament with two key saves in the last quarter of the first match to ensure her team won.

The tournament was held at St Alban’s Hockey Club and the players stayed at the University of Hertfordshire. Katy said “It was a great experience and I absolutely loved being part of the tournament and representing my region. I am thrilled to have been invited to the U16 England assessment group and look forward to the training sessions.” The final U16 England training squad will be announced later in the year.

Katy is sponsored by OBO and is an OBO UK Junior Pathway Ambassador for the hockey goalkeeping kit company.
