Henley Hockey Club Development News

Subsequent to the planning application and exhibition noted below, Henley Town Council have refused the Tesco plans. These may go to appeal at some time in the future.

On 10th January 2000 Tesco publicised plans for extending their Henley store.

Tesco's outline proposals were viewable at their Henley store and are outlined in the following drawing and text which has been extracted and adapted from the Tesco publicity material. An exhibition of their extension plans took place at Henley Town Hall on Friday 6th and Saturday 7th October 2000. The Henley HC committee believe that the Club's future expansion plans could be greatly assisted by the proposed development.

For better sport and brighter shopping

Looking forward to a safer, fitter future in Henley, improved shopping opportunities and upgraded sporting facilities are given top priority in exciting new proposals we are putting forward for consideration by Henley Town Council.

Making best use of the opportunity to extend our store and relocate the sports club to a more appropriate site, our plans can make a real difference for everyone in the local community:

  • Meeting your demand for better shopping with more choice and a wider range of services

  • Developing safer, more modern sports facilities with a new club house and provision for indoor and outdoor sports on one self-contained site

In overview, the plans include extending the current store on its south-west side to incorporate extra clothing and household sales space. It is intended that additional car parking would be provided in the south-west part of the site in the areas currently occupied by sports clubhouses, changing and parking.

To make sufficient space for these developments the current sports clubhouses and changing would be demolished and a new 2-storey clubhouse and changing block built alongside the north side of the current astroturf pitch.

New - dedicated - sports parking would be provided alongside the Railway boundary in the current Tesco car park.

Clearly, as far as Henley Hockey Club is concerned, this remains a development which is worthy of close consideration as it could give additional on-site facilities including an opportunity for a viewing "balcony" overlooking the astroturf surface. With further funding generated by ourselves there may also be an option for a second astroturf surface - something which will become essential if Henley HC's development and growth is maintained.

Your Committee and Development Sub-committee will continue to keep this under review and will have further discussions on the plans if and when an appeal seems likely.

If you have hockey related comments on the plans then please contact one of your Henley Hockey Club Development Committee members (Chris Baker, Frank Cordrey, Alan Mortimer or Richard Sessions) or any other member of the full Henley Hockey Club committee.
